About Tecumseh

A charming bedroom community in Lenawee County, Tecumseh is located where M-50 crosses the River Raisin, east of M-52. The first settlers arrived in 1822, and two years later Musgrove Evans and General Joseph W. Brown founded the village of Tecumseh. It served as the county seat until 1838, when the seat was transferred to Adrian. The city was named after Tecumseh, a powerful leader of the Shawnee people who fought during the War of 1812.

Although Tecumseh is surrounded on three sides by the township of the same name, it is politically independent.

With a vibrant downtown area, Tecumseh offers multiple annual cultural events starting with the Tecumseh Ice Sculpting Festival in January. The Southern Michigan Railroad Society, a functioning railroad museum runs through Tecumseh and brings tourists to the area. The M-50 corridor supports this tourism with cafes, fine dining, antique dealers, and more. Another tourist attraction to the area is the site of the Dynamic Kernels Tithing Project, a world famous event where a local miller named Perry Hayden planted wheat, donated 10 percent to the church, replanted the remainder, and repeated for six years. In 2008, Riverbend Friends Church started the project again in the hopes of inspiring people in the manner that Hayden did.

The Tecumseh Public Schools district consists of Tecumseh High School, a traditional high school, Tecumseh Alternative High School, Tecumseh Middle School, and four elementary schools. In 2009, Tecumseh was ranked 93rd on a list of the 100 “Best Small Towns to Live In” by CNN Money.
